The Charities Act was signed into on 28 February 2009. The Act provides for the establishment of a framework for the regulation of charities in Ireland.

The purpose of the Act is to reform the law relating to charities in order to ensure greater accountability, to protect against abuse of charitable status and fraud, enhance public trust and confidence in charities and increase transparency in the sector.

The Act will be commenced in stages.
